Transylvania men’s soccer turns in third straight shutout to begin 2020-21 season with win over Hanover

Lexington, Ky. – A duo of Pioneers found the back of the net leading to a 2-0 victory over the Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday evening at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The victory improved Transylvania's record to 3-0 on the season while the Panthers suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 2-1.

Wednesday's win for Transylvania stretched its season-opening stretch of scoreless time by its opponents to 270 minutes with the third straight shutout.

The Pioneers asserted their dominance early in the first half as in the 7th minute, Hunter Little drove the ball from midfield through the Panther defense and connected a pass to Mitchell Crispin, who laced the ball through the back of the goal for his first score of the season and an early 1-0 lead.

The Panthers had an opportunity for the equalizer in the 36th minute on a shot by Xander Ochsner, but the Pioneer defense summoned sufficient pressure and forced the shot high. Transylvania ended the half with the lead.

Coming out of the intermission, the Pioneers did not miss a beat. In the 50th minute Devin Craig applied pressure to the Panthers defense, drawing two defenders to stop his advance. Craig bypassed the defenders and made a touch pass to Peyton Netherton, who snuck the ball past the outstretched hands of the Panther goalkeeper to increase the Pioneer lead to 2-0.

Transylvania goalkeeper Gino Arena collected four saves on the evening for his third consecutive clean sheet.

The Pioneers recorded five shots on the evening, three of which came on goal.

Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, March 13 at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers in Terre Haute, Indiana. The match is set for 4:30 p.m. at Rose-Hulman Soccer Field.
