Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team clicked offensively but was bested by a golden goal in a 3-2 double overtime loss to the Bethany College Bison at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers drop to 0-3-1 on the season following the loss while the Bison move up to 2-1-1 on the year.
Both sides were feeling out the game in the opening minutes as the battle for possession ensued for the first half hour. Bethany broke through in the 32
nd minute as a cross was whipped into the box. Transy's
Luke Harrington attempted to head the ball out of play but the deflection careened into the back of the Pioneer net to make it 1-0 in favor of Bethany.
The Pioneers found redemption, not once, but twice early in the second half. In the 51
st minute, the Pioneers answered through a bit of individual skill from
Mitchell Crispin to emerge free and center the ball.
Henry Roetker was on the end of the Crispin cross and the freshman slotted the ball into the back of the net to equalize the match at 1-1.
Transylvania maintained the pressure as
Hunter Little took advantage of a poor clearance by Bethany to head the ball in just moments later to earn the Pioneers a 2-1 lead in the 55
th minute.
Bethany mirrored the second goal from the Pioneers in the 59
th minute as the Bison capitalized on a poor clearance and knotted the score up at 2-2.
After neither side could find the winner in regulation, extra time was needed to determine the winner of the fierce contest. Bethany found its chance and won the game in the 104
th minute with a long-range shot to end it.
The Pioneers look to rebound in a fixture against the Alma College Scots on Sunday, September 12
th. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
