LEXINGTON - The Transylvania Men's Basketball team won its seventh straight game, defeating Baldwin Wallace in the Don Lane Classic Championship as
Colby Napier and
Jaylan Green earned All-Tournament honors. Green was named tournament MVP after scoring 27 points in the win over DePauw yesterday and 30 in the win today. Transylvania won the championship 87-64.
After being tied minutes into the game, Transylvania went cold and the Yellow Jackets heated up. Baldwin Wallace took advantage of missed jump shots and feee throws by Transy and would go up 30-19 midway through the first half. After being down 26-38 with under 5 minutes to play in the half, Transy went on a 10-4 scoring run to cut the deficit to 6 points going into the final 20 minutes.
The second half was arguably the best half of the season on both sides of the basketball for Transylvania. The Pioneers scored 51 points while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 22 points, and used a 22-5 run over a 7 and a half minute span to extend their lead from 55-54 to 77-59 and take the life out of the Yellow Jackets.
The 23 point lead is the second largest margin of victory this season, and the 51 points scored in the second half of the most scored this season. With the win, Transylvania improves to 8-2, their best start to a season since the 2011-2012 season.
The Pioneers shot 51% from the floor, making 37 shots and finishing 7 of 21 from three point range. The defense held Baldwin Wallace to 27% shooting in the second half.
Jaylan Green finished with a season high 30 points, with 18 coming in the second half. He finished the game with a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds.
Dakota Capps finished with a season high 12 assists in the win.
Hunter Penn shot 75% from the floor, scoring 12 points and adding 7 rebounds.
Colby Napier scored 18 points off the bench and made 4 three pointers in the win.
Transylvania remains unbeaten in the month of December, having gone 6-0. They'll look to have a perfect month when they take on future conference opponent and in-state foe Berea College next Friday at 1 PM in the Clive M. Beck Center.
