LEXINGTON - Transylvania Men's Basketball rolled through the month of December unbeaten and earned their 8th consecutive win on Friday afternoon with a 10 point win over future HCAC opponent and old time rival Berea College. The Pioneers were led by
Zach Stahlman who finished with a season high 18 points, and finished the game perfect from the field on 5-5 shooting and going 2-2 from the free throw line. Four Pioneers reached double figure scoring, as
Jaylan Green continued his impressive season a 25 point performance, his 5th game out of his last 6 with 20+ points.
In their first matchup since the 2009-2010 season, both teams traded leads in the first 12 minutes. Berea jumped out to a 19-15 advantage but a
Colby Napier jump shot and back to back free throws by Stahlman tied the game. After a three pointer by Berea, Transy used a 26-12 run over the final nine minutes to run into the half up 45-34.
Berea scored 50 points in the second half but was matched by Transylvania's 49 and couldn't overcome the 11 point deficit in the first half. The Pioneers lead was extended to as much as 16 but late Mountaineer points cut the deficit to 10.
A key factor in Transylvania's win came on the fast break. 23 of Transylvania's season high 94 points came on the fast break as the Pioneers took advantage of the wide open space left at the other end of the court. Transylvania also dominated in the paint, outscoring Berea 52-38.
Matthew Teague finished the game with 18 points, tying his season high. He was 7 of 10 from the floor.
Colby Napier finished with 11 points.
Dakota Capps had a season high 10 points.
With the win, Transylvania moves to 9-2 on the season and earns their 8th consecutive win. The Pioneers haven't lost a game since November 18th and will have a chance to earn their 9th straight win next Wednesday when they take on Earlham College on the road. The Pioneers have won the last 6 games dating back to the 2019-2020 season.
