Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Transylvania Men's Basketball stays unbeaten in conference play after thrilling 77-76 overtime victory at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind- The Transylvania Men's Basketball team moved to 5-2 this weekend after defeating Manchester University in overtime, 77-76. The Pioneers earned their first road conference win of the season after a second half surge carried them through overtime.

The Pioneers struggled in the first half despite shooting better in the first half (41% FG) than the second half (39% FG). Transy trailed the whole half as the Spartans would out-shoot the Pioneers from deep. Manchester was 7-15 from behind the arc in the first half as the Pioneers could only cash in two three pointers all regulation. Defensively, Dakota Capps was able to hold their leading scorer to 2 points in the first half.

Matthew Teague had a season high afternoon. Teague finished with a double double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to go along with 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

The Pioneers wouldn't take a lead in all of regulation, battling back from a 14 point halftime deficit. Effort kept the Pioneers in the game as they would have 19 second chance points coming off 17 offensive rebounds. Transy dominated in the paint and communication on defense chipped away the Manchester lead.

Jaylan Green would finish as the game's leading scorer, finishing with 23.

"Jaylan Green was able to create a lot of things for himself, but when they started helping that opened up other opportunities for guys." Head Coach Brian Lane said after the win. With more openings, Simon Smith would finish with 14 points. Smith was able to tie the game up at the line late, hitting both free throws to knot the game at 68-68.

In overtime the Pioneers shot 80% from the field to earn the lead from the jump. After taking the lead the Pioneers wouldn't let it go, locking down defensively to come out with their third straight conference win.

Lane praised his team's effort after the win. "It was a total team effort with great fight in the second half. We did miss at the beginning of the second half but we got the rebound and scored. We played guys more minutes than usual but they didn't appear tired down the stretch."

Assistant Coach Mike Stone accomplished a rare feat this afternoon. Due to Coach Juli Fulks not being able to coach due to an illness, Stone helped coach the Transylvania Women's Basketball team to win before helping coach the men's team to a win.

Up next for the Pioneers is another HCAC road game as the Pioneers take on the Bluffton University Beavers, December 18th at 2:00 PM in Bluffton Ohio.
