Our Pioneers played their Season Opener in the 2023 season this afternoon in Baltimore Maryland, where they played Cortland in a Neutral site game on the Campus of Johns Hopkins. Head Coach Zack Getsee took this traveling opportunity to not just go and play baseball but to educate through cultural experiences. This morning the Transy Baseball team toured the White House in our nation's capital giving a unique and lifetime memory for each player feeding the culture of lifelong learners here at Transy.
This season opener for the Pioneers didn't go as planned, falling to Cortland 1-13. The first inning, Sophomore Calvin Shubert got the Pios going getting into scoring position after a stolen base, followed by a Youngblood base hit to right field. From here, Shubert was on third then sent home by an Austin Taylor RBI. This put the Pios up 1 to nothing throughout the first two innings defending well from the field. From the third inning on, Transy's Henry Mitcham had a double play which boosted morale, however, the Pios just had a hard time containing Cortland. Â
Junior Trent Youngblood comes into this season as a two time All American as well as a D3 Baseball and ABCA/Rawlings first team All-Region. After having a career season last year the hopes are high for this youngman as he faced adversity in this game earning 2 hits in his 3 at bats. However Cortland was able to shut down the Pios from the third inning on scoring the entirety of their runs from then on.Â
After the game head coach Zack Getsee had this to say:
"We played alright. Too many free bases are always going to come back to bite you against a team that's as accomplished as Cortland is. We'll take what we need from it and move on to Sunday."
The Pioneers are not done in Baltimore as their weekend has stacked up with competition having a double header Sunday against Johns Hopkins and Wittenberg.Â
