Box Score HANOVER, Ind.— The Pioneers extended their win streak to five games moving to first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-0 win over Hanover College Tuesday.
Transylvania continued its recent tear through conference play, with its fourth consecutive shutout outscoring its opponents 12-1 through the last five matches. The Pioneers lead the HCAC in scoring averaging 2.2 goals per contest.
The dominant Transylvania offense struck first as sophomore Blake Chidester found teammate Ben Rossoll for the go-ahead goal in the 10th minute giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. The Pioneer defense pressured the Hanover offense forcing numerous shots wide of the net. The Panthers managed six shots in the first half, but the Transylvania defense challenged each shot, refusing to let the Panthers get on the board.
As the first half came to a close, Transylvania goalkeeper Cody Waltrip grasped what would be the tying goal of a header from Hanover's Matt Grau to keep the Pioneer lead at 1-0.
In the first few minutes of the second half, Transylvania nearly extended its lead on a shot from Tanner Dice, but Hanover's John Seewer was there for the save. Following Dice's shot, the Panthers' offense generated several shots of their own, but could not find the net.
With less than a minute to play, freshman Freddie Siegelman added his third goal of the season giving the Pioneers and insurance goal extending the lead to 2-0 for their fifth straight conference win.
The Pioneers need a win against Anderson University, Nov. 1 to earn the No.1 tournament seed and the HCAC title. Transylvania owns the tiebreaker with Rose-Hulman after a 0-0 draw on Oct. 11.
In its final regular season game of the season, Transylvania hosts Anderson University Saturday, Nov. 1 for a pivotal match. Saturday's match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Rose-Hulman ended the Pioneers' season in 2013 with a 1-0 win in double overtime in the HCAC Tournament Championship game.
