Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.—The potent Transylvania offense netted five goals in a 5-0 rout of Anderson University to earn a bid to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship match.
With the win, the Pioneers extend their winning streak to seven games. Transylvania has outscored opponents 24-2 during that span.
Wednesday's match marked the second time in five days the two teams met, as the Pioneers outscored the Ravens 12-1 in the two matches and looked to continue momentum from a 7-1 win over the Ravens Saturday.
Transylvania did just that, penetrating the Raven defense early and often. Freshman Riley Calhoon sent a shot just right of the net in the fourth minute keeping the score at zero. The Pioneers regained possession and a cross from senior Daniel Mudd to sophomore Ben Rossoll sailed just high of the crossbar. But it was only a matter of time until the Pioneers got on the board. Transylvania sits atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in goals scored, averaging 2.7 goals per contest.
The Pioneers maintained possession and capitalized off an Anderson foul sending senior Max Robinson for a penalty kick. Robinson calmly sent a liner off his right foot finding the back of the net putting the Pioneers up 1-0 in the sixth minute of play.
Transylvania's offense kept the pace, pushing the ball toward the Anderson net threatening time and time again. The Pioneers sent several crosses to no avail, while holding a 1-0 advantage. The Pioneers struck again in the 30th minute when Calhoon found the net for one of his two goals on the night. Calhoon drove a roller into the bottom left corner of the net, after Blake Chidester drove toward the net finding Calhoon on the cross.
However, the Anderson offense nearly found the net as time wound down in the first half, if not for the hands of Transylvania's Cody Waltrip. The junior goalkeeper snatched multiple shots from the Ravens in the plentiful rain keeping the Ravens off the board helping the Pioneers carry a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Pioneers added three insurance goals in the second half propelling themselves to a 5-0 win. Calhoon added his second goal of the night in the 60th minute extending the Transylvania lead to 3-0.
Chidester, along with sophomore Ben Rossoll also added goals in the second half. The trio of Calhoon, Chidester and Rossoll lead the HCAC in total points.
The Pioneers will host the HCAC championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Saturday's championship match is a rematch of the 2013 HCAC tournament championship when Rose-Hulman defeated the Pioneers 1-0 in double overtime to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The winner of Saturday's match advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The two teams ended in a double overtime draw in their match on Oct. 11 at Rose-Hulman.
