Pioneers out-hustle Ravens in 16-point comeback victory

Box Score ANDERSON, Ind. â€" The Pioneers didn't flinch when down 16 points to conference-foe Anderson early in the first half Saturday, but instead mounted an incredible rally to win in the final minutes, 69-65, on the road.

Freshman Alex Jones took no time returning to his pre-injury form, recording a whopping 29 points and leading the team in scoring in just his second game back on the hardwood. Jones went 12-for-19 from the field and 5-for-7 from the charity stripe, while also recording three steals on the night.

Sophomore Parker Stansberry and freshman Logan Wade also netted double-digits, recording 12 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Joe Jennings also led the way for the Pioneers on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.

The first half started off in the Ravens' favor, as they took the opening two points of the contest. Stansberry put Transylvania's first points on the board with a three-pointer at the 18-minute mark, but the Pioneers would find it difficult to surpass the Raven's impressive shooting over the next several minutes.

In two minutes, Anderson had managed a 10-0 run to lead the Pioneers by 11. Another three from Stansberry would put a dent in the Raven advantage, but wouldn't halt the Ravens.

By the 5-minute mark, Anderson had pushed the lead to 16 after dipping to five, an opportunity of which the Pioneers found it difficult to capitalize. With three minutes remaining in the first, Transylvania made their move, hitting three-straight layups and a pair of free-throws to go on an 8-0 run, cutting the Ravens' advantage to eight, 34-26.

Two final shots from the charity stripe by Jones, after a made jumper by Anderson, kept the Pioneers within eight at the halftime buzzer, 36-28.

The Pioneers were downed by perimeter shooting from the Ravens in the first, who went 5-of-12 from behind the arc, and strong work on the glass. Anderson grabbed 22 rebounds to the Pioneers' four, resulting in 11 second-chance points.

The uneven scoring balance didn't help the Pioneers either, as only three Pioneers contributed in the first 20 minutes. A majority of points came off the hands of Jones who netted 17 points in the first half alone. Only two others, Stansberry (8) and freshman Ethan Rowe (3), netted numbers in the points column.

But the second half was a completely different ball game.

Coming off the halftime strong, Transylvania's Jones netted two back-to-back jumpers, cutting the Anderson lead to four. Just a minute later, Stansberry added to the cause, hitting a jumper of his own to bring the game within two, the closest since the opening minutes of the contest.

Though never gaining the lead, the Pioneers fought against the Anderson defense, creating a see-saw of scoring from the 15-minute mark to the 9:30 mark.

Then, the Pioneers came alive.

With nine minutes on the clock, Wade, coming in off the bench, drew a foul from Anderson's top scorer, Scott Schweiterman, sending him to the line for two. Hitting his first two points of the ballgame, Wade knocked down two clutch free throws to find the Pioneers within one, 52-51.

Forty-seconds later, freshman point guard Mason Monroe hit his first points of the contest at a pivotal moment, tying the game 53-53 with 8:22 on the clock. Despite going down by three just seconds later, a layup and one free throw from Monroe pushed the Pioneers back into a tie with 5:13 remaining in regulation.

From that point forward, the momentum was purely in the hands of the Pioneers.

With 1:10 on the clock, Jones had pushed the Transylvania advantage to five, 67-62. Yet, with 50 seconds left, a clutch 3-pointer by Anderson's Nathaniel Acree cut the lead to two. After inbounding, Transylvania took 27 seconds off the clock before calling a timeout with 23 seconds remaining in the contest.

With 16 seconds counting down on the clock, Monroe missed a jumper which was rebounded by the Ravens. A missed jumper by the Ravens with eight seconds left was rebounded by Jennings, who tossed it to Wade with four seconds remaining. An intentional foul by the Ravens sent Jones to the free throw line where he sank the teams' final two points, securing the comeback victory, 69-65.

Transylvania improved from 27 to 46 percent shooting from the field in the second, seeing contributions from bench players that were absent in the opening minutes. Though falling behind on rebounding and second-chance points, the greatest Pioneers advantage was in turnovers, in which the team committed only five to the Ravens' 14, a number which Transylvania converted into 21 points.

Transylvania (8-13, 6-8 HCAC) heads home to face conference-foe Franklin on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
