Volleyball Splits Day Two at Wittenberg Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO - Transylvania split day two of the Wittenberg Invitational in Springfield.

Juniata 3, Transylvania 0

In the first matchup of the day for the Pioneers, they took on the reigning Division III National Champions in Juniata. Isabella Myers opened set one with a kill, assisted from Macy Lentz, to put the Pioneers in control. After two points from Juniata, Peyton Mast responded for Transylvania with a kill to tie the score. After multiple runs from Juniata, the Pioneers found themselves trailing 20-12, but they would respond with an impressive five point sequence including two kills from Addie Atcher, two kills from Lilly Kaiser and an ace from Cecelia Roberts to cut the deficit to three. Later in the set, they would rally with another late run with a kill and a block from Myers, to cut the lead to one at 23-24, but Ava Gummer would score on a kill to give Juniata the opening set. 

In set two, Transylvania opened on an 11-7 run featuring a three point sequence of a kill from Kaiser and Atcher, and an ace from Lentz. After a Juniata rally to retake the lead, the Pioneers responded with a 4-0 run to take a 15-12 advantage. Later in the set, a kill from Atcher, an ace from Roberts and a block from Kaiser and Lentz gave the Pioneers a 22-18 lead, but Juniata would respond with a 5-1 run to tie the Pioneers at 23-23. Atcher would score on a kill, assisted from Lentz, to retake the lead, but Juniata would score two consecutive points to retake the lead. Trailing 25-24, Mast would score on a kill courtesy of a Julia Brown assist, followed by another point for the Pioneers to retake the lead at 26-25. Juniata would score three consecutive points to end a competitive set two, 28-26. 

In set three Transylvania held a 17-16 lead after scoring four consecutive points, including two aces from Lentz. The teams would exchange brief runs until Juniata found themselves leading 23-19, Transylvania responded with a kill from Kaiser to cut into the deficit, and would have another point after a Juniata service error, but the Juniata would take the set 25-21, and take the victory 3-0. 

Addie Atcher led the Pioneers with nine kills, Kaiser added eight and Myers recorded seven. Roberts and Lentz each scored three aces, while Lentz led Transylvania with 25 assists. Julia Brown once again led the Pioneers in digs, adding 17 while Myers added 12. 


Transylvania 3, Ohio Wesleyan University 0 

The opening set saw both teams battle in a competitive exchange, nearly trading points at every serve. A kill from Lentz and a kill from Roberts helped the Pioneers take the lead at 15-12, they would follow with another strong sequence moments later to extend their advantage. Atcher recorded two kills while Clara Rogers added another, capped by an ace from Lentz to give the Pioneers a 20-14 lead. Rogers and Kaiser scored two final kills to give the Pioneers a 25-15 opening set win. 

Set two saw a similar start from set one, with both teams trading points and struggling to build on a lead. The score had been tied four times in set two before Transylvania before Myers scored a kill to give the Pioneers a 16-13 lead. Later in the set, Myers would score another kill to give the Pioneers a 23-20 advantage. After cutting the deficit to one, Myers scored another kill and Audrey Gass recorded an ace to close set two with a 25-23 Transylvania win. 

In set three the Pioneers offense was on full display, taking a 19-7 lead. Addison Jarvis scored on a kill assisted from Lentz to give Transylvania a 20-8 advantage. Another kill from Jarvis and a kill from Alex O' Connor, and a final block from Jarvis gave the Pioneers a 25-9 set three victory. 

Atcher led the Pioneers again in kills, recording eight, while Myers and Roberts each added five. Lentz led Transylvania in assists again with 23, and in aces, recording three alongside three from Gass. O'Connor and Soleil Sabin led Transylvania with 11 digs each. 

Transylvania returns to action on Wednesday, September 17th, traveling to Wilmore for a matchup with Asbury at 7:00 p.m.
