Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University men's soccer team dominated the visiting Berea College Mountaineers by a 3-0 margin at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday. It was the Pioneers' season opener and the first game of the Transylvania Soccer Showcase.
Transy combined an aggressive offensive approach with a stifling defense game en route to the easy victory. Offensively, the Pioneers attack the Berea back line and put pressure on their defenders, taking 27 shots in the match.
Defensively, Transylvania was able to maintain possession for much of the match and stop any serious run from Berea well before the attacking third. The Mountaineers mustered only two shots, both from outside the 18-yard box on the run. Only one shot attempt was on goal, which was saved by Pioneers goalkeeper Cody Waltrip.
Junior Freddie Siegelman started the day quickly for Transy, as he beat his man around the edge on the left wing and worked his way to the top of the box for a shot, but he missed wide. The Pioneers continued to press and get shot opportunities, taking five more shots in the next 17 minutes.
The pressure paid off eventually for Transylvania as junior Blake Chidester put a shot into the bottom left side of the net from the right side to put the Pioneers on top 1-0 in the 24th minute.
Transylvania did not let up, taking a number of shots over the closing 20 minutes of the period but failed to score but they took their one-goal lead into the locker room.
The second half saw much of the same, as the Pioneers sent attack after attack deep into the back line of Berea, but they struggled to find the target, only putting one shot on target in the first 17 minutes of the second period.
The Pioneers' persistence paid off, however, as they scored two goals in the second half. Freshman Thomas Shellenberg scored his first career goal at the 62:12 mark and sophomore Kevin Carroll found the back of the net for the first time this season with less than 10 minutes to play in the closing period.
Siegelman took five shots in the game, as did sophomore Riley Calhoon. Carroll and Matt Melzer took four shots while Shellenberg added three. The Pioneers put seven shots on target.
Head coach Matt Vogel was pleased with his team's performance, noting it was a full team effort.
"It was nice to see us score (after a 0-0 draw in the first game) and once the first goal came, we relaxed offensively. Defensively, we were solid, holding them to two 40-yard shots," Vogel said. "We possessed and controlled the game and once we scored we became more confident. We will take that confidence and momentum and build on it for the next game."
Transylvania returns to the field on Monday at noon against Belhaven University at Pat Deacon Stadium.
