Albert B. “Happy” Chandler ’21 lovedsports and played them all at Transylvania. He was a pitcher andcaptain of the baseball team, leading the Pioneers with a .356batting average. He also was captain of the football team andplayed basketball. He would later serve as a state senator,lieutenant governor, governor (twice), United States Senator, andCommissioner of Major League Baseball from 1945-51, during the timeJackie Robinson became the first African American to play in theMajor Leagues. He is a member of the Major League Baseball Hall ofFame.
