Transylvania University

Shearer is a strong supporter of the athletics program at Transylvania. As president, he often attended Pioneer games and took an active role in major decisions affecting athletics, including the addition of two playing fields—John R. Hall Athletic Field and William A. Marquard Field—and the Clive M. Beck Athletic and Recreation Center. Transylvania became a member of the NCAA Division III and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference during Shearer's administration.
